ZAGARA

PREVIOUS

From 1997, the year he graduated from the School of Arts St. Joost [Breda, the Netherlands] Department of Architectural Design until approximately 2007, Zagara used bricks to express his thoughts.
Most people’s familiarity with Zagara is bases on this artistic period. The brick works encourage the imagination by reference to universal images. The forms are minimal and basic. Zagara focused on simplicity and tried to find each object’s essence.
He first used brick in his exam work -four chairs made out of brick-. In this project he discovered the purity of this material. Most of his sculptures the bricks were first laid with mortar before shape them into smooth and solid forms by the grinder.
So first Zagara had to create a volume before freeing a sculpture out of it. Another aspect of the brick work is Zagara’s reintegration of the pastiness of the original clay, from which the bricks were made, into his sculptures. Thus, the bricks, which people usually think of as hard and angled, became in his sculptures soft almost fetish and curved.
